BAT Pack II 1st - 10th July 2010, Mile End Pavillion
BAT Pack II is an exhibition of art works, performances and interventions in
and around Mile End Art Pavilion.
Ollie Harrop - Group shot
Lee Edwards - Babe in the Woods
Kata Halasz and Zsolt Balogh - Rewolucja
Lisa Jahovic - Tap
The ‘Pack’ consists of 62 artists working with diverse subjects and media. All
artists are part of the Bow Arts Trust LiveWork scheme, which uses short-life
housing to provide artists with homes and studio space — with the added
benefit of helping to regenerate the local area.
The scheme has created a new artists’ community within Tower Hamlets.
Over 100 artists are housed on the Leopold Estate, Warren House, Balfron
Tower and Carradale House. Residents include Said Adrus, Simon Terrill,
Marmite Art Prize curators Stephanie Moran and Marcus Cope (who also cocurate
BAT Pack), and rising stars Lee Edwards, Lise Marker and Jeremy
Willett.
As part of their tenancy agreement artists are required to make a difference in
their local community. BAT Pack has come about through a partnership
between the artists and Tower Hamlets Head of Parks Michael Rowan, in a
bid to create a dynamic programme for local venue Mile End Art Pavilion.
Over the ten days of the exhibition the artists will animate the Art Pavilion and
its surroundings. Corinne Felgate will flood the Pavilion pond with 1,000
rubber ducks. A multiples art market will take place in the open air, and a
writer-in-residence will respond creatively to the works and the environment.
Head of Parks Michael Rowan is excited. “This show will definitely attract the
broadest possible reception from the art world and local residents,” he said.
“Mile End is developing a reputation as an Art Park and this is exactly the type
of exhibition that will help us achieve that aim.”
The opening event promises live art, music and a decent bar.
• Opening event Wednesday 29 June 6 - 9pm. Open daily, Thursday 30 June -
Sunday 10 July, 12 - 6pm. Sharing event with writer-in-residence Uschi
Gatward: Sunday 10 July 4pm. Mile End Art Pavilion, Clinton Road (off Grove
Road), Mile End Park, E3 4QY
